The Department of Biochemistry in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, has 33 faculty members, of whom 25 have their primary appointments in the department.

Their research interests cover a broad spectrum of topics, including nucleic acid-protein interactions, regulation of gene expression, structure and function of proteins, receptors, muscle biochemistry, mechanisms of enzyme catalysis, metabolic regulation and the structure, function and assembly of biological membranes. The department is also home to a number of outstanding research groups.

Research funding is obtained primarily from agencies such as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Heart and Stroke Foundation (HSF), the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Province of Alberta’s Small Equipment Grants Program, and Alberta Innovates - Health Solutions(AI-HS).

These agencies provide funding in the form of operating and equipment grants, graduate studentships, fellowships, scholarships and establishment grants for new investigators, which amounted to over $15.4 million
  in 2009.
